If you are installing the COMPLETE WINDOWS 95(not the UPGRADE) software, you are going to need a boot floppy. To make one, from a working WINDOWS 95 system open MY COMPUTER. Select the floppy drive. From FILE, click FORMAT. You can either FORMAT (FULL or QUICK) and COPY system files or just transfer system files. You can also use ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE to make a WINDOWS 95 STARTUP disk.
From the C: prompt you can make a boot disk by entering: FORMAT A: /s Now, go into the system SETUP (most often by hitting the DELETE key on start-up) that's the target of the install. Once in SETUP check (often in the ADVANCED section of the utility), make sure that the BOOT SEQUENCE starts at the A (floppy) drive. If you've got it at C (or CD ROM), it might be forever (or never) before it looks for a boot floppy. For a new drive, after the physical installation is complete, you need to run FDISK and establsh the partition. After that the DOS FORMAT needs to be done. A WINDOWS 95 STARTUP disk will have both FDISK and FORMAT on it. If you are doing your own packing, don't forget them. Use the boot disk to start the new system to an A: prompt. If you are installing the COMPLETE version of WINDOWS 95 from floppies you can just doittoit after your new system boots. You will want to be careful of viruses, especially with a floppy install. If a virus attacks floppy disk number two when it tries to write the user information , that could derail the install. Scan the system first. To be extremely safe, you can WRITE-PROTECT all the floppies by opening the plastic tab on the floppy. When the WINDOWS 95 wizard tries to write to a write-protected floppy, it'll generate an error message, but it will proceed. As an aside, only put up WINDOWS 95 from a leaning tower of floppies if you are terminally CD challenged or if you are like in Antarctica and the nearest CD disk is 900 miles away. It's a long tedious precedure feeding in all those disks. Some sort of bad karma always seems to prevail at some of the last 3.5"s - a bum floppy, a power failure, or somesuch. On top of that, the CD version actually contains items not found on the floppy version. Also, as you upgrade the system, you'll need again to put in the WINDOWS 95 install disk(s). With the CD this is one easy item. With the 3.5"s you'll need again to shuffle through the deck ad nauseum, if not ad infinitum. And of course floppies are easily ruined by all sorts of environmental factors, while the CD is much tougher. When you buy WINDOWS 95, demand the CD! Many vendors have a "habit" of handing out the floppy box. I'm guessing that either they get a deep discount on the 3.5" loser or that they are somehow coerced into buying a certain number of these albatrosses. If you are installing the complete version of WINDOWS 95 from a CD, then you have to have a CONFIG.SYS file that defines your CD ROM drive's driver and , an AUTOEXEC.BAT that starts MSCDEX.EXE, the driver file, and the MSCDEX.EXE file all on the boot floppy. The CD ROM manual, tech support, and/or the vendor should be able to show you how to set up your boot floppy to also configure the CD ROM drive. A sample CONFIG.sys and AUTOEXEC.BAT for a boot floppy to fire up the CD ROM drive is below:
CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=MAXIDE.SYS /D:MAXCD001 AUTOEXEC.BAT
MSCDEX.EXE /S /D:MAXCD001 /V /M:20 If you have the UPGRADE version of WINDOWS 95, you should have installed DOS and WINDOWS 3.1X first. I've read that the UPGRADE version will install the same as the COMPLETE, with the exception that it will ask for you to insert WINDOWS 3.1X disk number one. This is to make sure that you deserve to save the couple of bucks!
