Step 1:
See INSTALLING A HARD DRIVE in the REFERENCE section of COMPUTERCRAFT.
Set the new drive up as drive D:
Tip:If your motherboard has two IDE connectors, then install the soon
to be D: drive as the SECONDARY MASTER. This way, you won't have to fiddle with the jumpers
on either hard drive at all.
Step 2:
Either start WINDOWS 95 in COMMAND LINE ONLY or shut the system down to MS DOS MODE.
From the C: prompt run FDISK. In FDISK, select the second hard drive. In FDISK
DON'T DO ANYTHING WITH THE PARTITION OF THE FIRST HARD DRIVE! THAT WILL DESTROY ALL THE DATA!
Once you've selected the second hard drive, then declare a primary DOS partition. For simplicity,
it's assumed here that you will allow the partition to use all available space. Exit FDISK and let
the system re-start.
Step 3:
In WINDOWS 95 open MY COMPUTER and select the new (D:) hard drive. From FILE select FORMAT. Choose
FULL and COPY SYSTEM FILES. After the format is complete, allow the system to run SCANDISK with the
THOROUGH option. If the new hard drive shows any errors return it for a replacement! With
today's advanced drive technology, there is NO acceptable level of bad sectors!
Step 4:
From the START button select RUN. Type in xcopy C:\*.* /e /h /k /r /c D: and then click
OK. Depending on the size of your drive, this may take a long time to complete.
Step 5:
If you don't already have one, go to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMSin CONTROL PANEL and create a WINDOWS 95
STARTUP DISK. Test the STARTUP DISK to make sure that it is not an oxymoron - a
STARTUP DISK that does not start up!
Step 6:
Again following the directions in INSTALLING A HARD DRIVE Set the
new hard drive up as the C: drive. Remove the old hard drive or set it up as the D: drive.
Step 7:
Boot the computer with the WINDOWS 95 STARTUP DISK. Run FDISK. Make the partition of the new C:
drive an ACTIVE partition. Exit FDISK. You should now be able to start WINDOWS 95 from the new
hard drive.
Hint:If you get a DRIVE IO ERROR when you try to start the system for the first time, don't worry too much just yet. Boot from the STARTUP DISK again. Run SYS C:. When you see SYSTEM TRANSFERRED, remove the floppy. Try to boot from the fixed disk again. It'll probably be OK. If you still have a problem, double check with FDISK that the first partition of the new C: drive is defined as ACTIVE. If it still won't boot, and you are sure that you followed all the directions correctly, unfortunately the hard drive is defective.
